January flew on bye. We have had a great February so far, just a dusting of the white stuff on the 4th , all gone yesterday. I woke up to a happy camper nestled in the back just off the deck.

He surely looked comfortable right there by the bird feeders. The hawks have also been swooping in every so often.

Yesterday my handyman, boy from next door, closed off the side and back decks so that Toby now has a play yard when the weather is good. I couldn’t let him off leash before as he would bolt after the squirrels, deer etc. Now the wildlife are safe from him and he from them. No more mud encrusted, tick infested little doggie.

Today and tomorrow are expected to be warm so I will begin getting the RV ready for it’s first trip of the season. I can hardly wait for April to be here. I have a 3 week trip planned to Charleston, SC and the mountains of northern Georgia and southern North Carolina. The Spring migration will be in full swing by then and the waterfalls in the area should be spectacular.

Yesterday on New Year’s Eve we decided to take a break and went to The Toy Train Museum in Ronks, PA. We had a great outing and were amazed at the number of different types of trains. This museum is run by an all volunteer staff.

He decided to come down to Maryland and help me out with a few things around the house and we managed to sneak in a couple of local day trips to Shenandoah National Park, Antietam Battlefield and Harper’s Ferry. He got to experience the downpours in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Nicole. I can honestly say I have never seen it rain that hard for so long(36 hours of downpours). He did say though that he will be back in spite of the bad weather.

After being home only 10 days, I took off again for the remainder of the summer. I headed up to see Anthony for a few days over the August long weekend then drove out to Alberta and spent a total of 3 weeks in both Calgary and Lacombe. I went sans RV this time just to see how I would do. Although it is much cheaper to travel with the car I did not enjoy it as much and will be taking the RV in the future. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay in both Calgary and Lacombe as I was able to spend time with both family and friends relaxing and enjoying their company. I love my trips west as none of the people I visit feels obligated to take me places and entertain me. On my way back east at the end of August I detoured and spent time in both Glacier National Park and of course Yellowstone(this was my 5th visit to Yellowstone). I arrived back at Anthony’s for Labor Day Weekend and pulled into the driveway at home on September 7th. My next long adventure will be in early 2011 back to Florida.

My sister Kathryn, BIL Michael, Toby and I spent a glorious week in Myrtle Beach the second week of July. Our camp spot was at the Myrtle Beach Travel Park right along the coast. We were literally 50 feet from the ocean but a large sand dune protected us from the ocean spray. It was a crowded park, well run with lots of activities for children and teens and few golf carts ( they are a big problem in some of the other parks). The weather was HOT and HUMID but being near the ocean was a blessing. We spent time at the beach each day in the early morning and explored the area in the afternoon. Toby had a great time running along the beach (on a long leash) and playing in the surf.

After a long snowy winter I decided to get away mid June and headed for The Blue Ridge Parkway. My main goal was to spend some time in southern Virgina attending bluegrass music venues and then head down the Blue Ridge Parkway to see the portion in North Carolina that we had never managed to see.

Meadows of Dan VA was my first stop for 3 nights. I revisited some spots I had been to in 2007 and explored many new areas from Roanoke VA to North Wilkesboro NC. The weather cooperated fully and it was early enough in the season so that the crowds were at a minimum.

I then moved the trailer down to Pineola NC to a private campground just off the parkway and settled in for 7 nights. The mountains of NC were cool at night and warm during the day. This was a very quiet friendly park with many seasonal residents some of whom I met. I will definitely return whenever I am in the area. Being settled for a week afforded me the pleasure of being able to do some exploring and hiking. There is so much history in the area and quaint crafts outlets that I felt right at home. I was trying to get some photos of the famous rhododendrons but alas I was too early, maybe next year.

I thought that south of the Mason Dixon Line meant little to no snow. Boy was I wrong!!! This February has set new records for this part of Maryland.

Toby is enjoying this white stuff and that may be because he does not have to shovel. Thank goodness he emerged from the house as a black dog.

We had our first big dump just before Christmas 2009. By the time I returned from Ontario that was all melted. January was cold with little snow, then came February.

I got a great birthday present this year! 26 inches (65cm) of snow and no power for 5 hours.

I still had a great day though. Fireplace, candles, steak on the grill and friends and family calling all day and night. The schools have had 5 more snow days than they had planned on. This means that if we don’t get any more snow for the remainder of this Winter, school will be out on June 23rd. Personally I am thinking they will need a day off for July4th.

I am so glad that I took my retirement early. I could get a serious job with the truck if I added a snowplow to the front. Hey why not???? First I would have to find the truck though.

I am not going away with the trailer any time soon!!!

I left Alberta on Wednesday the 29th with a friend who will travel east with me. We spent the 29th in Great Falls, MT and arrived in Gardiner, MT Thursday.

Three nights in Gardiner afforded us two full days in Yellowstone. Not nearly enough time to see everything but we did manage to see the major attractions along with several animals. Bald Eagles, Grizzly Bear, Black Bear, Elk, Bison, and Pronghorn Antelope were just a sampling of what we saw. Yellowstone never ceases to amaze me. This was my 5th visit to the park and will not be my last.

We leave tomorrow for our journey east. Toby has been a fantastic traveller. The trailer is his home now.
