For the past week we have been touring the National Wildlife Refuges and lakes in the northern states. We have seen some birds new to us however we seem to be ahead of the Fall Migration. It has been relaxing spending time at Fort Peck, MT and Garrison, ND. We are now in Moorhead, ND, getting caught up on domestic chores as well as doing some birding before heading east and south to visit family in the area.

After spending 3 days relaxing, fishing and birding with friends at Calling Lake we are headed south to spend a week in Calgary with family and friends. We will be staying at the Lions Campground in the small town of Okotoks just south of Calgary. They do not yet have internet service so we will resume posting after our Alberta experience.

The Grizzly Diner

Here we are at Stewart, BC / Hyder, AK. We have been viewing bears feeding below the FishCreek viewing platform. The setup here is wonderful. The platform stretches along the creek for approximately 1500 meters. We walked back and forth following the bears or trying to anticipate their next move. Despite the severe lack of fish, the grizzlies kept coming. Yesterday evening we saw seven bears feeding. Some of the older siblings were having disagreements about whose fish was whose.

Today, more and more bears. Glen is having a time trying to figure out which pictures to post here. Hopefully they will be ready soon.

Tomorrow we begin our trek across BC and Alberta to join friends for some camping and fishing. We will be in Calgary on the 13th.

We left Juneau on Tuesday aboard the AMH Ferry “Taku”. 32 hours and 5 ports later we arrived in Prince Rupert today 7:30am. The trip was relaxing and enjoyable. We saw some of the outlying areas of the Inside Passage, and we saved several days of driving.

We are now in Stewart, BC and heading off to see the bears a few miles away in Hyder, AK.

Wow!!

The ferry ride was relaxing, after we got “the beast” aboard. The attendants were extremely helpful and we got on and off with ease. We had one of our rare sunny days and the scenery was spectacular. We will be spending 3 days here touring the city, the Mendenhall Glacier and the wildlife areas along the 40 mile highway. Juneau is the only state capital not accessible by road.

Bears, bears and more bears. We have had a great time watching the bears feed on salmon.

Bears swimming in the river. Bears trying to get below the bridge. Bears taking advantage of the weir.

Life is sweet when you can cool your butt in the river and catch fish for lunch at the same time!!!

It definitely was a beary good day!!!

One Bird, Two Bird, Red Bird, Blue Bird

The variety of birds in the Haines area is amazing. The spawning salmon attract a number of waterfowl,  and eagles.

shore birds

and bald eagles.

The number of eagles at this time of year is in no way near the masses of them that congregate here in the winter. The open waters of the Chilkat River make this a haven for nearly 4,000 eagles.

I have had the good fortune of adding many new birds to my life list.

Haines, AK

After changing our plans yet again, we arrived in Haines on the 26th. It was a very scenic drive over The Chilkat Pass and along the Chilkat River.

Haines is a beautiful city at the mouth of the river along The Lynn Canal. There are many wildlife viewing opportunities here. We saw several bald eagles although not nearly as many as during the winter. Over 3,000 bald eagles congregate here from mid October through February to feed on the fish along the open waters of the Chilkat River.

The Tlingit influence is very evident all around the city.

Natural areas and recreational opportunities abound.

Carmacks

What a day. It has been raining since we left Dawson this morning. We set out for Whitehorse, however when we reached carmacks the only highway was closed due to washout from all the rain.

Luckily we managed to get an RV site in town and spent the night in warmth and safety. Carmacks is a quaint first nations community on the banks of the Yukon River.

It was one of the roadhouse stops along the route to Dawson. The community has restored the roadhouse and there is a nice tour of the various historic sites.

If all goes well tomorrow morning we should be off for Whitehorse.
